About

Hey there!

I’m Alex, a postgraduate student, feature writer, and aspiring novelist who spends her time thinking long and hard about fiction. I’m particularly fascinated by reoccurring tropes and archetypes, whether in modern genres or mythology from millennia ago… or, even better, how one has evolved to influence the other. At time of writing I’m working on a doctoral thesis about the Trickster archetype in queer young adult fiction. I am bi, ace, and very tired, and I use this blog as a more playful space to get out my thoughts on media and literature.

I read a lot of YA and I love recommending it, which you will find a lot of here. I also write about anime, manga, comics, other novels, video games, and (less often than I used to, but still occasionally) superheroes.

If you want to read my research papers, go here! I write about young adult fiction, queer media, and you will see me using the phrase “playing with tropes” a lot.

You can find me writing feature articles on Anime Feminist and Lady Geek Girl and Friends, and micro-posting and attempting to be witty on Twitter. You can also follow my Anime Planet and my Goodreads to keep an eye on what I’m watching and reading!

  3. Hello! I’ve enjoyed reading your blog, so I’m also nominating you for the Very Inspiring Blog Award. Yay, you have two nominations! No one said I couldn’t nominate someone who has already been nominated, so I’m doing it! Here’s the link to my post: http://tiffanymetzger.wordpress.com/2012/12/06/im-inspirational-who-knew/

I like most of the same things you do – reading, collecting books, observing, telling stories, tea, watching too much TV and procrastinating. Oh yes, definitely procrastinating. Best wishes to you and your blog!

  4. Hi! I really enjoyed the post you wrote in defence of the character that serves as the main scapegoat either in tv or book series.

  5. Somebody else who likes TV Tropes! Yay! That thing is like a black hole of internet procrastination, as awesome as it is. I love your blog, and I laughed out loud at the fourth, zombie apocalypse bullet

  6. Just letting you know that I’ve nominated you for the ABC Award. πŸ™‚ http://t.co/GwSDKBdqPr
