I’m Alex (she/her or they/them), a postgraduate student, feature writer, freelance editor, and aspiring novelist who spends their time thinking long and hard about fiction. I’m particularly fascinated by reoccurring tropes and archetypes, whether in modern genres or mythology from millennia ago… or, even better, how one has evolved to influence the other. At time of writing I’m working on a doctoral thesis about the Trickster archetype in queer young adult fiction. I am bi, ace, non-binary, and very tired, and I use this blog as a more playful space to get out my thoughts on media and literature.
I read a lot of YA and I love recommending it, which you will find a lot of here. I also write about anime, manga, comics, other novels, video games, and (less often than I used to, but still occasionally) superheroes.
If you want to read my research papers, go here! I write about young adult fiction, queer media, and you will see me using the phrase “playing with tropes” a lot.
You can find me writing feature articles on Anime Feminist, The Anime Herald, and Lady Geek Girl and Friends, and micro-posting and attempting to be witty on Twitter. You can also follow my Anime Planet and my Goodreads to keep an eye on what I’m watching and reading!
